On September 1st, the continent will play host to a natural wonder of the astronomical kind: an annular eclipse of the sun.

Millions turned their eyes to the sky as a solar eclipse created a "ring of fire" from Asia to the western US, where it was greeted with excitement.

A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible from South Africa on Monday, the South African Astronomical Observatory said.
